Papain is an enzyme found naturally in the fruit of the papaya tree (Carica papaya). This enzyme helps break down protein, the process of making it ideal as a meat tenderizer. After taking 2 capsules 4 times a day for 4 days, runners found superior recovery and reduced muscle soreness compared to the placebo group.

2.2 Support wound healing

Topical papain enzyme products are often used for their wound-healing effects. There are preliminary studies supporting the papaya enzyme’s ability to aid wound healing. A 2010 animal study conducted in Malaysia showed that papain-based wound cleaners help reduce wounds, promote collagen deposition, and show antibacterial properties. According to a 1995 Controlled Study, of 192 people with shingles, a protein-proteolytic enzyme preparation is effective in treating shingles symptoms such as acyclovir antiviral drugs. However, more evidence is needed to confirm these findings.

3. Notes when using Papain

  • Papain can irritate the throat and stomach. In excessive doses, papain can cause severe throat damage. Serious allergic reactions may also occur. People who are allergic to figs and kiwi may also be allergic to papain.
  • Pregnant and lactating women: taking papain during pregnancy may not be safe. Experts fear the drug could cause birth defects or miscarriage. There is not enough information about the safety of using papain during breastfeeding. Therefore, papain should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Bleeding disorders: papain may increase the risk of bleeding in people with blood clotting disorders or taking anti-coagulants such as warfarin. Because of this, papain may increase the risk of bleeding during surgery. Stop taking papain 2 weeks before you have surgery.
