1. What is the flu?

Flu is a respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. The disease begins suddenly and usually lasts 7 to 10 days. Most people recover completely. However, for the elderly, young children and people with weakened immune systems, it can turn serious, even leading to death from complications. In addition, currently, dangerous flu viruses, which are widely spread, are appearing more and more like H5N1, H1N1, H7N9 …
Influenza viruses are usually spread through an infected person’s discharge when they cough, sneeze or talk. You can breathe in the virus directly or touch infected objects, such as phones or computer keyboards, and then put your hands on your eyes, nose, and mouth. People infected with the virus are likely to infect others before flu symptoms appear until about five days later. This is very dangerous because it will make the flu spread quickly in the community.
Influenza viruses are constantly changing, with new strains appearing frequently. Before you had the flu, your body made antibodies to fight that particular virus. If the future flu viruses are similar to the ones you encountered before, those antibodies can either prevent infection or reduce the severity of the illness. However, antibodies cannot protect you from new strains of influenza. Therefore, you may still get flu in the future.

There are two concepts to distinguish between flu and colds. I will clarify these two concepts, please see the table below:

5️⃣ Supplement vitamin C: Take vitamin C to the body as much as possible when the immune system is weakened. Although fruits like oranges and lemons are high in these vitamins, you may not want to eat anything when you’re sick. Therefore, supplements are always the best choice.

6️⃣ Ventilation of places of residence: Closing your home or office all day is not entirely beneficial to health. The air being circulated makes your room clogged and damp, causing bacteria to multiply and grow.

7️⃣ Eat garlic: Garlic contains allicin, a compound against pathogenic virus agents. British researchers show that people who have the habit of eating garlic reduce the risk of colds by more than 30%. You can add garlic to your dish when cooking. However, it is best to eat it raw.

8️⃣ Get enough sleep: Insomnia or too little sleep all affect health. When you lose sleep, your body’s cells don’t recover after a tiring day of work. The body’s resistance decreases, making you more susceptible to infection.

9️⃣ Enhancing exercise: Regular physical activity will help to warm the body and blood circulation to avoid symptoms of fatigue and energy infection.

🔟 Influenza Vaccination: To proactively prevent colds and flu, in addition to strengthening resistance, people should get a flu shot every year. This is the most effective way to prevent the flu.
